You may have heard the term “health coach” popping up in magazines , TV and social media. However, I often find when I tell someone that I’m a health coach, they have absolutely no idea what I do. Health and wellness coaches are now being hired to work in doctor’s offices, spas, gyms and there are private practices all over the country. A health coach can offer services and fill gaps that doctors and nutritionists don’t have the time or resources to fill. Many doctors are starting to partner with health coaches for their patients who are overweight or obese and need to change their behaviors in order to improve their health and prevent lifestyle-related illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Health coaches are at the forefront of today’s health revolution and can help you make permanent changes to your lifestyle!
So what’s a health coach?
A health coach is a wellness authority and a supportive mentor who motivates individuals to cultivate positive health choices. Health coaches educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through lifestyle and behavior adjustments. To put it simply, health coaches are highly educated guides in the fields of nutrition and wellness. By working with a health coach you are more likely to reach your goal whether it be losing weight and/or improving your eating habits and those of your family. Health coaching focuses not only on the foods you eat, but also your lifestyle and how it affects how you eat. What you eat and put on your plate affects and, in turn is affected by, every other area of your life. Unlocking one piece often leads to changes in many other areas of your life.
It generally takes a year of training to become certified as a health coach and many health coaches, like myself, have additional qualifications such as a masters degree in nutrition or public health.
A health coach can help you implement small changes step by step, and keep you on track at a pace that’s comfortable for you so you can achieve your health goals. A health coach will work with your own unique bio-individuality. Everyone is different and needs a different approach. A health coach will help you discover what works for YOU and design a program around who you are. Hiring a health coach is a great choice if you are looking for personalized help.
